Thai West: What It Is and What It Isn?t

Looking for a place to relax on the beach, pick some tropical fruit right off the tree and eat it at its freshest, or do a bit of sea kayaking and windsurfing on calm emerald green waters? Not looking for junky souvenir stands, massage parlors, drugs, karaoke bars, noisy taxis, and little monkeys wearing yellow and red suits and dancing a jig for a banana? Then you have landed at the right resort. Thai West on Koh Siboya is all about relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty Thailand has to offer. Oh, we do have monkeys, but they are wild monkeys and they will steal your food if you leave it out!

We are a Thai family with the rather long and somewhat unpronounceable name of Saraapengkhcaew (Sap en gow). Our sister is married to an English-speaking foreigner and they spend much of their time in Hong Kong, and she helps us with our English. There are two brothers and one sister who run the resort with our spouses and children.

Pahtpai is the oldest sister and she handles meals, reservations, laundry and housecleaning. Pahtpai's husband, Pon, is the driver of the Tuk-Tuk, which will pick you up at Koh Siboya pier. Pon assists Acomb in building and maintenance. Pahtpai has two little girls, Bupe (7) and Bangpon (4). Bupe is a budding tour guide and will very soon speak the best English on the entire island. Bangpon is a bit shy but is a very nice little girl.

Acomb is the oldest brother and he is the building repairman, longtail boat operator, tour guide for off-island excursions, and head crab fisherman (if you have never tried fresh crab, just ask Acomb when it will be on the menu, and if you are really up for an adventure, ask to "help out" next time he goes out for crabs). Acomb's wife Noi helps Pahtpai with cooking, laundry and housecleaning, when she is not caring for her two boys Dotcom (6) (yeah, that is really his name, and he was named that way before anyone in the family knew about the Internet), and Diu (2). Dotcom is very considerate and is great at showing other children around the resort; Diu shows great promise as a tour guide but currently spends most of his time complaining that Noi (now pregnant with her third child) doesn't pick him up and carry him enough.

Nong is the youngest brother and he is a former Buddhist monk. Nong is in charge of the landscaping, feeding the fish, island-based excursions, and spiritual discussions for anyone wishing to participate. Nong also assists Acomb in the off-island excursions, and is usually the guide if someone wants a tour of our island by scooter. Nong is single despite several serious attempts made by various visitors and local women.

All accommodations are custom built with a different design, décor, landscaping, and most important of all, location, location, location: Beach, River, Sunset, Hilltop, Garden Duplex: Palm Room, Garden Duplex: Lotus Room, and six Thai Bungalows. Each tailored for a different experience, we will help you pick your accommodation so that your stay at Thai West is exactly what you?ve been dreaming of :

Beach House : A few steps from your door and you are on our pristine beach, perfect for strolling or sun worshiping. Let the wush, wush of the ocean lull you to sleep in your seaside bungalow. Beach House is surrounded by a lush hedge of exotic Thai plants and ponds full of tropical fish. Enjoy a stunning view of the ocean from the porch. It has one (1) bedroom, one (1) bathroom, and a breakfast nook. Sleeps two (2) persons, two (2) twin beds or one (1) queen bed (all with mosquito netting).

River House : Catch up on your favorite spy novel or steamy romance with the soothing sound of the river that seasonally runs just 4 feet below you. River House has several private decks hanging just feet over the river. A word of warning though, during the wet summer months, the meandering river becomes a torrent and the frogs and crickets crank up the volume, so please come prepared to sleep through a considerable symphony of natural noises. It has one (1) bedroom and one (1) bathroom. Sleeps two (2) persons, one (1) queen bed (with mosquito netting).

Sunset House : Sunset House is our newest bungalow, with an ocean view and plenty of room for a family. Lounge on the front porch and enjoy the sunset before supper. It has one (1) large bedroom with a sitting area and one (1) bathroom. Sleeps four (4) persons, two (2) king beds.

Hilltop House : Hilltop House is two stories, approximately 1,600 square feet in "open" style. The bottom floor is our reception area and souveneir shop; the upper floor is available for rent. The open style means that there aren't private bedrooms, but there are plenty of beds, couches, and portable sleeping mats so that everyone can find a space to call their own. The upstairs rental includes a large deck, with magnificent views of the resort and the ocean, suitable for sleeping under the stars. Please keep in mind that the house's open style may not be right for you if your group consists of more than two (2) couples wanting privacy (one in the house portion; one on the deck).

Palm Room / Lotus Room : The Garden Duplex was designed for families, as there is a private studio (Palm) for the parents and a connected (but not by any door) 2 bedroom studion for the kids (Lotus). However it also works fine for people who just want to rent part of it. When we built the Garden Duplex we tried to surround it with a lot of palm trees and flowing plants, and its back windows open up to the Thai rainforest.Palm Room has one (1) bedroom and one (1) bathroom. Sleeps two (2) persons, one (1) king bed (with mosquito netting).

Thai Bungalow : These six traditional Thai-style bungalows, with two layers of bamboo thatch walls, all have ocean views. They are not as large as our houses, but for the single person or a couple who plans on spending most of their time outdoors, the Thai Bungalows offer an economic way to enjoy Thai West. Each has one (1) bedroom and one (1) bathroom. Sleeps two (2) persons, one (1) queen bed (with mosquito netting).

Directions : Koh Siboya is in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand. See a map of Thailand. See a map of the Krabi area.

Typically, Visitors arrive at Koh Siboya by way of Bangkok and then Krabi. You can get to Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok (BKK) on Thai Airways International, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Quantas, United Airlines, and others.

From Bangkok you can get to Krabi by plane, train, or bus. We strongly recommend that you fly into Krabi rather than take the bus or train, as spending twelve (12) hours traveling the length of southern Thailand is not conducive to sleep (and not that much cheaper than just flying in).

Plane 1 hr 15 min  Thai Airways and Air Aisa fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Krabi. Nok Air and One-Two-Go Airlines fly from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Krabi.

Train Overnight train, plus 2 hr bus ride From Bangkok Railway Station take the train to one of the following stations: Trang, Phun Pin in Surat Thani Province, or Thung Song in Nakhon Sri Thammarat Province. From any of these places a bus may be taken onward to Krabi (be sure to get off the bus at the Nua Klong bus stop). Regarding train schedules and costs, contact Bangkok Railway Tel. (02) 223-7010, 223-7020.

Bus 12 hr Buses leave Bangkok for Krabi (be sure to get off the bus at the Nua Klong bus stop) daily in the evening. There are 24-seat air-conditioned buses, 40-seat air-conditioned buses, and 40-seat non air-conditioned buses. Contact Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Borommarat Chonnani Road) at (02) 435-1199, 435-5061 (air-conditioned bus) and (02) 4345557 (non air-conditioned bus).

The ferry to Koh Siboya operates from 7 AM?5 PM, so choose your bus accordingly. For example, if you take the 4 PM bus from Bangkok, you will arrive at the Nua Klong bus stop around 4 AM and will have to wait about 3 hours until a taxi can pick you up.

  • Interest Attractions in Krabi ::
Tham Lot Nuea and Tham Lot Tai

To visit these two caves take the Ao Luk-Laem Sak route for approximately two kilometers and then take a right turn to the Bo Tho Pier. From the pier, hire a rental boat and travel along the Tha Prang Canal for approximately 15 minutes. After passing a mangrove swamp, you will see Tham Lot Tai – a cave beneath a limestone hill with a stream flowing through narrow passages. The main attractions are beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Tham Lot Nuea is a large cavern with meandering passages longer than those of the Tham Lot Tai, which are navigable only during low tide.

    Khao Pra-Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary

Khao Pra-Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Ban Bang Tiao, 18 kilometers from Amphoe Khlong Thom. Major attractions in this Sanctuary include a 2.7-kilometer nature trail through lowland forests, the Emerald Pool and a variety of natural habitats. The forest is home to rare birds like Gurney's Pitta, Rufus-colored Kingfisher, Black Hornbill, and various kinds of plants. Visitors are allowed to stay overnight but they have to bring their own tents.
